In 1811, Friedrich Jahn opened an open-air gymnasium in a field outside Berlin. People came to lift weights and do gymnastics on purpose, in a fenced-off area, on a schedule. A hundred years earlier the whole arrangement would have sounded strange. Most people did not need a dedicated space to use their bodies, because the day already handled it. You walked because there was no other way to get anywhere. You lifted because someone had to lift the thing. The work of being alive used the muscle, and the muscle stayed.
Then machines took the lifting. Looms, engines, assembly lines, eventually office chairs. By the late 19th century the average person was not moving enough to stay strong by accident, and movement quietly turned into something you had to decide to do.
Going to the gym is choosing to strengthen your body. Skipping it is the same kind of choice pointing the other way. Both options are openly available, the long-term results of each are reasonably well understood, and nobody is confused about which one means what.
The Same Play, Different Muscle
AI is running the same play on cognition.
The mental version of those daily reps was never labeled as exercise either. You wrote your own emails because nobody else was going to write them. You did the arithmetic in your head, or you did not get the answer. Holding the thread of an argument long enough to make it was just part of having the argument. Sitting with a problem until it gave was the only route through. None of this was framed as practice. It was the price of being a functioning adult.
Now most of it is optional. The friction that built the muscle is gone for whoever wants it gone, the same way the daily demand for physical effort went away once the machines could handle the lifting. The reps are still there for anyone who wants them, but they are no longer the cost of getting through the day.
The Comfort of Old Tools
The obvious counterargument is that we have been here before. Socrates worried in the Phaedrus that writing would gut human memory. Pocket calculators were supposed to wipe out mental arithmetic. Spell-check was going to finish off whatever literacy survived. The tools came, the panic faded, and people went on thinking.
The history is right, but the analogy is doing more work than it should. Writing offloaded memory, sure, but the writer still had to compose the sentence. A calculator handled the arithmetic but did not pick the right operation, or know what the answer meant once it appeared. Spell-check fixed the spelling and stopped there. Each of those tools removed one specific step from a thought process and left the rest of the process up to the person doing the thinking.
AI is not like that. It will frame the problem, write the response, and judge whether the result is any good, and the output still goes out under your name. That is a different kind of tool, and the reassurance that we coped with the calculator does not carry over.
You Cannot Feel It From the Inside
Physical weakness announces itself. You feel the stairs, the suitcase, the slightly winded version of yourself that used to handle both without thinking. The body keeps an ongoing log of its own condition and is not subtle about sharing it.
Cognitive weakness does not behave that way. You do not notice the thoughts you did not think, or miss the argument you could not have constructed, because there is nothing there to miss. The gap only becomes visible when you have to operate without the tool, which is the exact situation AI is making rarer by the day.
The evidence is starting to pile up. A 2025 study by Michael Gerlich in Societies surveyed 666 people and found a significant negative correlation between heavy AI use and critical thinking, mediated by cognitive offloading, with the youngest cohort hit hardest. A 2020 paper in Scientific Reports tracked drivers over time and found that more lifetime GPS use predicted steeper decline in hippocampal spatial memory, even after accounting for whether people thought they had a good sense of direction to begin with. The MIT Media Lab's Your Brain on ChatGPT preprint put EEG on the question and found lower neural connectivity in LLM-assisted essay writers compared to writers using nothing at all, accumulating over four months. The MIT study is small (n=54), still a preprint, and the specific numbers belong in pencil. The direction of the arrow lines up with the rest.
The piece of this that does not get enough attention is the metacognition piece. Work on what researchers call metacognitive decoupling has found that AI use can improve the visible output while quietly degrading the user's ability to assess their own thinking. A 2025 paper in Computers in Human Behavior put it in the title: AI makes you smarter but none the wiser. Other work has documented a reverse Dunning-Kruger pattern, where people with more AI literacy are more overconfident, not less. The tool produces a clean-looking artifact, you read it, recognize it as something you would more or less have written, and walk away feeling sharp. The capacity that would have produced it on its own was never asked to fire, and there is no internal signal that tells you it didn't.
The Decision You Don't Know You're Making
The body's gym is a clear contract. You go or you don't, and the long-term result of each option is widely understood. The mind has no equivalent contract. Nobody hands you a frame for cognitive fitness, no monthly membership card, no resistance setting on the toaster.
So the decision gets made anyway, just not out loud.
Asking AI to write the email is a rep you would have done yourself an hour ago. Asking it to summarize the article you were going to read is the same thing again, two minutes later. Letting it explain something you could have figured out is the same thing again before lunch. None of it feels like a decision about your mind. It feels like getting on with your day.
The body's gym is one decision a week. The mind's version is hundreds of small decisions a day, scattered across messages and searches and quick "summarize this for me" asks, and none of them feel important by themselves. Each is a quiet vote for or against the capacity you came in with. The drift is small and cumulative, the exact shape of drift human attention is worst at picking up.
A decision you do not know you are making is still a decision. And it is the worst kind, because you cannot reverse what you cannot see.
The same asymmetry runs across generations. People alive today had the foundation built for them, mostly without noticing it was being built. The world insisted on the practice. If you wanted to know a thing, you remembered it. If you wanted to make a point, you found the words yourself. If you wanted to get anywhere unfamiliar, you held the route in your head and trusted yourself to follow it. The reps were not optional, and the muscle showed up by default. The first generation for whom the reps are optional from day one is in school right now. The decision of whether to build the capacity at all belongs to them in a way it never belonged to anyone before.
The Cognitive Gym
None of this is nostalgia. The cognitive gym is not about refusing the tool. Nobody refuses the car to prove they still have legs, and nobody serious is going to refuse AI to prove they still have a mind.
What it is, instead, is deliberate practice. Drafting the thing yourself before you ask anyone, machine or otherwise, to take a look at it. Doing the arithmetic in your head before reaching for the model. Reading a long thing all the way through instead of scrolling to the summary. Memorizing what you actually want to know rather than bookmarking where it lives. Sitting with a hard problem long enough that your own brain has a chance to fire, even when you know a tool would shortcut you to the answer. The work is in the friction, the same way the work at a real gym is in the resistance, not in the air conditioning.
The bifurcation that comes out of this is the same one I wrote about in AI and Knowledge Work, just one layer further in. The job-level version sorts people by who complements AI and who gets replaced by it. The personal version is simpler, and it operates by daily behavior rather than role. Some people lift. Some do not. The middle category, the person who stayed sharp without trying because the world made them, quietly disappears.
What separates the two ends of that distribution will not be intelligence, and it will not be willpower. It will be whether the choice was visible to you while you were making it. You are choosing right now, reading this. You will choose again at the next message you write. The tools are not going anywhere, and the choice is not going anywhere, and the question is whether you would like to be aware that you are answering it.
